Launched early 2015, Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey is one of several ryes launched in recent times, some by companies who are traditionally bourbon producers. The good thing about these bigger guys is they have more resources, letting them take time to do things well and the quality of this one is lauded. At this price it’s a bargain.
Strength is 45.2% abv and the mashbill comprises 53% rye, 14% malt and 33% corn. Chris Morris, the Master Distiller has come up with rye creations before but this is the first mainstream, ongoing one. He tells us in the introductory video that their rye “is going to blow the doors off the concept of rye” and that this one “is all about flavour”. I’d bet it’s a cracker in cocktails, as well as on its own.
TASTING NOTES
Proof: 90.4°
Appearance: Rich honey.
Nose: Spicy with distinct notes of rye, black pepper, cedar and cassia bark sweetened with a dusting of marzipan. Hints of pear, apple and almond dance in its depths.
Taste: Clove, rye, mint, molasses, sorghum and honey mingle together with hints of apple and malt.
Finish: Long and sweetly spiced.
